Actually, the card is a Sound Blaster Live, but that is a good thought.
The motherboard has a built-in audio (don't know what kind), that I had
disabled once a long time ago. Checking the BIOS now, I see that it is
enabled.

I disabled the MB audio again, and the install was successful!

Now I will start putting back some of those problematic desktops and see
if it traps again.
