The probability that the Comm API is in any way related to your Java
applet problems is near zero. More likely, the relatively new code in the
font engine is the issue. You might want to disable or uninstall the font
engine and check if this is the case.

Maybe, but I suspect the traffic is near zero.

Unless you have a support contract with IBM, it's the eCS newsgroups or
here. :-)
