Probably not. Java has security built-in from the core. Baring defects,
applets can't get outside the sandbox, unless you specifically allow this
with java.policy settings. The same is true for Java applications.
Applications can be a bit more of an issue if one invokes them via Java
Web Start. The apps must follow the policy rules, but since they are
applications, they hava more default access than an applet would and most
folks haven't a clue how to set up the policy files.

As always, the level threat is somewhat inversely proporational to the
user's level of awareness.

This thread is yet another of those indications that we have a long way to
go in solving the basic security issue which is a general lack of
awareness of the nature of the threats. Spyware has been around for
years, here we are answering basic questions about the threat.
