Ok, folks, I haven't said anything for a while 'cuz I have been in a
test/reboot cycle for several days.
I got Gary's SYSRESTR.CMD file, modified the paths, and gave it a try. I
saw several errors flash by as it ran, but the Pause key would not work,
so I couldn't figure out what they were. I tried booting the system
anyway, but got the same result, a hang with a frozen clock cursor in
the middle of the screen.
Modified SYSRESTR.CMD to produce a .LOG file. It showed several errors
in deleting the old Desktop due to a Folder template with the SH flags
on. I manually removed those and tried again. Same result. Tried to
restore different versions of the backup files. Same. Remmed out most of
the RUN= statements in CONFIG.SYS on the theory that something started
by one of those programs was the bad guy. Also killed STARTUP.CMD and
RXAUTOST.EXE although I don't think it ever got that far.
Hmmm, maybe it's something to do with SNAP!?!?!? Re-installed SNAP.
Same. Alt-F1 boot and revert to VGA. IT BOOTED, but UGLY! Also built a
personal version of SNAP on the SciTech web site, V2.9.2(?). This died,
too, so I opened a ticket with the SciTech Help Desk. SteveW suggested
that I try GENGRADD. IT WORKED! I tried SNAP again, but without
D:\OS2\SVGADATA.PMI. It trapped. That may be the expected behavior
without this file, I don't know, but I used DumpTrapScreen and sent the
dump to SciTech.
Right now it sits with the SciTech Help Desk. At least I can run from my
maintenance partition or with GENGRADD.
Thanks for all your suggestions and help!
BTW, I downloaded V 5.10.23. Peter mentioned 5.10.25. Is that available
somewhere?
