Bob,
I'm copying in here part of an email exchange I had with Tim Sipples, which may
have some overlap with your questions.

Hi Tim,
This is a later follow-up to your reply to me of about a year ago. The
current issue models in this series that are now being sold are the T-41 and
the T-42. (I'm told there are still a few leftover T-40s still in the
pipeline.) I will probably be taking another look at a possible laptop
purchase, so I'm wondering if the prior thinking _still_ applies ? There
have no doubt been some component changes along the way.
BTW, your 'Warped Bargains' alerts continue to be an interesting and
valuable service.
Thanks.

Jordan,
I'm just getting a ThinkPad T4x (not sure what the x digit is yet). As far
as I've heard it does just fine with OS/2 Warp and eComStation --
particularly the Warp 4.52 and eComStation 1.1 builds, since those have
better kernels and such. Loading Warp 4.0 would be a bit of a chore.
The modem is a problem spot. (No driver available as far as I know.) You
have to use a PC Card modem, like that Zoom modem I recommended.
The Mini PCI wireless is also a problem unless you either get an external
wireless bridge or go onto eBay and get the one IBM adapter that works. (I
mentioned this, too, in my bargains list.)
Otherwise you should be in good shape. All the basics like power
management, hard disk, display, PC Card slots, USB, parallel, serial, etc.
should work fine. The BIOS setup program has all the important
configuration stuff, and the special hotkeys (Fn-F3 to turn off the display)
work fine. Hibernation might be tricky, but I prefer hanging on to the disk
space. :-) I suspect the Ultrabay hot swapping wouldn't work, but there's
not much reason to hot swap on this particular set of models. (The diskette
drive, if you even use it, is now external via the USB port -- with BIOS
support for diskette boot.)
Bluetooth probably wouldn't work. I don't know of any Bluetooth drivers.
Again, probably not a big deal -- I own exactly one Bluetooth device and I
never use it.
Audio should still be the SoundMax driver. I don't believe that's changed,
and it works well from what I can tell.
I keep hearing rumors that the eComStation people will soon have the option
to run eComStation with a Linux kernel underneath, so that would neatly
solve most device driver issues going forward. That said, I think the newer
Warp kernels and drivers are still just fine with the T series.
