I've been following the discussions on the DVD/RSJ threads with some interest.

Included with the SOYO Dragon bundle was a "Hi-Val" DVD... drive -- supposed to
do everything, of course. Day before yesterday, in the course of business, I
installed RSJ on the Dragon box. When I rebooted, OS2CDROM.DMD refused to load
(an expected result, according to the discussions). Both the Dani driver and
RSJ recognized the drive as "Generic DVD RW 4XMAX 2.65".

Prior to installing RSJ, the drive identified itself to the system as "S" and
acted like a normal CD-ROM reader. After RSJ was installed, "S" no longer
appeared in the drive list, but RSJ offered to attach "Z" to the system. When
I did that, the CD-ROM in the drive became visible. Since I was more
interested in reading CDs than in burning them, I commented out the RSJ stuff
and the Dragon returned to its previous state.

Today, for drill, I decided to try burning a CD/R. After restoring RSJ to
operation, I popped a fresh CD/R into the drive tray, attached it a "Z" and
copied my Utilities directory onto the new CD. All seemed to go well, and I
was able to view the contents of the "Z" drive with no problem. But, when I
tried to finalize the session, RSJ began generating error messages after what I
would judge was about half the close procedure. Following is the first few
lines of the log:

This error continues through another 20 or so iterations. It appears that RSJ
keeps looping through some instruction set trying to finish the finalization
process.

I'm debating whether this is worth pursuing with RSJ. I wasn't all that
excited about having a DVD burner, anyway. If I had been choosing the hardware
separately, I would have probably gone for a Plextor CD burner, similar to the
one I have in the Diamond Flower system. It works well and has given me no
trouble at all. Since the DVD burner was included in the bundle, I decided to
try it first. So far, I'm satisfied with it as a CD reader but thoroughly
underwhelmed by its capabilities as a burner.

This is a small glitch in what has otherwise been a very interesting and
satisfying project. The hardware went together with little difficulty, and eCS
installs to it without drama. I had a small issue with audio, but solved it
with a SoundBlaster Live! card. It is amazing what a difference eight years
can make in terms of speed!
