>	The CD you just ejected from drive (E:) is now readable in all CD-RW
>drives, and any MultiRead CD-ROM that has the UDF Reader installed.

The Roxio software I have gives me three options when I eject, and the
above is one of them. The third is one which says it can be read in any CD
player, with no reference to any UDF. I never choose the UDF option.

I really think the fact that you have such success, and I have such poor
luck pretty much backs up what I said. The inconsistencies show that the
CD format/design/hardware is barely acceptable and reflects a poor design
from the beginning, which has never been corrected and improved upon.

Its not like I never got a CD to work, but I never could be sure of
success. Plextor, HP, and several other drives, various brands of media
all contribute to my impressions over the years.

Incompatibility between RSJ and Windows, UDF or no UDF, and a host of
other issues simply reinforce my opinion that manufacturers are giving us
just barely workable tools, and not investing a nickel in improvements and
fixes, and we are paying the price for that lazy attitude by designers.

As I said, I will just stay with hard drives and success. I know folks
who have no problems, and I know of folks who have issues like I have and
there is no reason to think the situation is going to change with DVD. All
kinds of formats, different hardware and media, and a variety of standards
will all keep things ugly and difficult. Those who have no problems will
be shocked to read of users who burn 4 gigs and have a failure, and will
not comprehend the frustration of thinking you have backup, when in fact
you have nothing :-)

Much obliged for your comments.

John
