Jeffrey,
Extreme layman and non-laptop user speaking here, but this sounds to me like
you may have reached some sort of hardware failure. (Or maybe the BIOS flash
did not go well.)
He may not be an eCS user (?), in which case never mind, but I believe Steve
Carter
may have this laptop model, and it might be worth checking in with him.
