With your disappeared desktop directory I see noch chance to help ;-((
I found my little helper and it says:
Enter X:\Desktop to your CONFIG.SYS to recreate the Desktop again !
Unfortunately without a desktop directory It may not being recreatible
!? =

An entry in config.sys is not required, but I know that the directory

had there with my desktop seems to be gone.
