Sounds more like a bug in either COM.SYS or ELPC3X.SYS. Drivers are not
supposed to trap.
I just realized. Originally you said you were using the ELPC3 driver,
which is correct for the 3C589 NIC. Do you really have a LAN-Modem card?
That's what ELPC3X is for.
Which card do you really have?
Does the Play At Will object (or what ever it's called with eCS/MCP)
indicate that the NIC has been assigned resources?
What does 3NETLOG report?
