OK so the answer to the trap was to move the 3Com NIC driver ELPC3X.OS2
to AFTER the COM.SYS driver in CONFIG.SYS.

This looks like a bug in the eCS 1.1 install routine.

However the NIC still fails to work. The driver loads and its LED
lights, but after a minute a get a timeout DHCPSTRT failed to get
parameters".

Can I get some ideas how to proceed please? I have tried both
patched and unpatched driver, and also switched to a known-good
NIC, driver and connecting cable from the 600X. All fail identically.
