OK.

Unfortunately, although I am a pretty good guesser I am not a perfect mind
reader, so you would get better answers if you told me what you actually
put in the RESOLV files.

>Do I need a nameserver number for pacbell.net?

Absolutely.

>If so, how do I find it if nslookup doesn't work?

Pacbell could tell you, but if you have a working nameserver available,
which you do, it's easier to ask the working nameserver:

[j:\tmp\0]nslookup -type=ns pacbell.net
Server: rns2.earthlink.net
Address: 207.217.77.82

Non-authoritative answer:
pacbell.net nameserver = ns1.pbi.net
pacbell.net nameserver = ns2.pbi.net

Authoritative answers can be found from:
ns1.pbi.net internet address = 206.13.28.11
ns2.pbi.net internet address = 206.13.29.11

To see all the known addresses:

[j:\tmp\0]nslookup -type=any pacbell.net
Server: rns2.earthlink.net
Address: 207.217.77.82

Non-authoritative answer:
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimail6.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimail7.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimail8.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimail9.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimaila.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimailb.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimailc.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimaild.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimaile.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimail1.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimail2.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimail3.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimail4.prodigy.net
pacbell.net preference = 0, mail exchanger = pbimail5.prodigy.net
pacbell.net internet address = 151.164.129.3
pacbell.net nameserver = ns2.pbi.net
pacbell.net nameserver = ns1.pbi.net

Authoritative answers can be found from:
pacbell.net nameserver = ns2.pbi.net
pacbell.net nameserver = ns1.pbi.net
pbimail1.prodigy.net internet address = 151.164.30.65
pbimail2.prodigy.net internet address = 207.115.63.29
