New clue.  
 
I happened to open the hardware manager, and noticed that both the sound  
card and the network card were using IRQ10.  
 
I changed the IRQ for the network card to IRQ5, but the system trapped  
upon boot.  I changed it back, and boot proceeded without trapping.  My  
next step will be to change the IRQ of the sound chip.
