One consideration is to go Postscript plus whatever else you prefer.

That way, printing is OS-indepedent. You can always find a
postscript driver for whatever OS your're running at the moment.
And HP's PCL is pretty much a standard too.

My two printers do PCL 5/6 AND PS II for exactly that reason:

Xerox C20 (Lexmark Optra Color 45 (A/B size)) Inkjet
HP 1200 Laserjet

The above by way of example, not necessarily a recommendation.
Lexmark cartridges are a bit pricey, but ubiquitous and refillable.
