LapLink or similar software can transfer files over the serial port.
LPTool (http://www.dfsee.com/lptool.htm) can transfer files over the
parallel port, and might be able to use the serial port.
The DFSee mail list might be helpful. DFSee is a file system recovery
tool. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dfsee-support/
What does the error message say?
