Peter, Steven and Mark:
Thanks for the discussion of cmd.exe replacements so far, complete
with links.
Someday I'd like to learn more about Steven's file organization scheme.
\usr is a UNIX-ism, and I've never really understood its use,
especially how it might apply to my mostly-single-user machine.
Steven's use of \Apps seems similar to the "other guys'" use of
\Program Files, which I now realize conserves root directory entries,
and reduces/organizes directory clutter.
Aside: an former DOS user friend threw all sorts of rubbish in \bin,
thinking it meant something like "dust bin", a British-ism for trash.
Arghh!
I, too, own the Graham Utilities.
But years ago, in the days of Norton Utilities v4 I think,
I made up a simple batch file for a beep, mostly just to
see if it would actually work (it does):
@echo [-G]
(Not every editor is good at entering the code for Control-G.)
The overhead to execute a simple beep is certainly excessive,
but since it is intended for (relatively) slow human beings
it may not matter. And of course, today's machines are
significantly faster than yesterday's. [Unfortunately, mine
is from yesteryear.]
