Subject: SCOUG-Help: eCS 1.2 Missing Items (in this case FTP)

Content Type: text/plain

Content-Id:
Content-Disposition: inline

Hi Steven,

As you'll recall, my one install of 1.2 to date (on
the XPC portable) was incomplete. Networking install
failed, both during and after the fact, so the
Networking Folder is empty. Apparently, some other
stuff did not get installed either, as I am still
gradually discovering. While my DSL was down for
repairs, I had to use dial-up. The Dial-Up Tools
folder was empty. No big deal there -- I simply
dragged SLIPPM.EXE into the Dial-Up folder, and then
had that available for use.

Today, I had a need for the use of FTP, but found that
none of the other folders inside the Internet Folder
are functional. Trying to invoke any of this stuff
just brings up the error box you'll find attached to
this post. Command Line FTP (not really what I
wanted) proved fixable by fiddling with the Path boxes
in Properties. The other stuff like TFTP (huh ?) did
not seem to be fixable, so I'm thinking some .DLLs or
something may have gone missing . . . but I haven't
been able to i.d. which they might be. I do recall my
Warp 4 partition having a GUI FTP, which I have used
successfully, but maybe that got dropped for eCS ?

So, in the meantime, I took a stroll down Hobbes lane,
and found the following more promising looking
candidates:

EFTP507 ZIP 407967 11-23-99 7:28pm
FTPBR171 ZIP 476387 7-23-97 7:27pm
FTPIT23 ZIP 880854 3-08-97 7:26pm
HWIFS ZIP 196034 6-29-97 7:26pm
_________________________________________________

The first and 3rd. ones -- Emtec FTP and FTP_It -- are
shareware. Would you or anyone else care to recommend
one of these over the others ? Or can I transplant
the PM one from W4 ? And, much as I expected, there
seem to be some Java based ftp programs floating
around.

Sorry I couldn't make the Help Desk after all on Sun.
(hope you got my note in time, and did not go down
there for nothing). I still don't really need to do
PEER-style networking, but the incompleteness of that
install does sorta bug me, when things like this come
up. It is something I'd like to avoid, if possible,
when I install 1.2 into the other eCS partition.

Jordan
