As it turned out, Jerry had a suggestion for me, and it worked.
I had swapped out my video card for a NVidia GeForce 6600, which I don't
think is supported by the version of SciTech that comes with eCS 1.2
refresh. I tried installing eCS 1.2 refresh with plain VGA, and the
installation didn't complete (not to mention I eventually lost the
video, don't ask).
So he suggested to install with the SciTech that comes with the refresh,
then install the latest SciTech available via the Mensys FTP site for
those who have the eCS Software Subscription Services. This time the
install ran to full completion.
Needless to say I didn't have to come to NOCCC today (and I wound up
Xmas shopping with one of my lady friends :-)
