A bit too lat for me -- I got one of those Aceena (?) 56K ones you
recommended, a while ago used on Ebay. (Still would have preferred one of
those cigarette pack sized ones, to go with the Shuttle, but I don't think
those were ever even available at 33.6.) Your observation is basically
correct, and depends greatly on the local line conditions, but I have seen
as good as 45K performance. The supported protocols -- V.90, V.92, etc.
-- can also make a difference. I think all of the decent, later modems
had adaptive levelling.
