Subject: SCOUG-Help: Installing eCS 1.2 on Dell PC - the Saga Continues

To whomever is interested:
I did another install, and I have a working eCS 1.2 on the Dell
Dimension 8400. This time, it took a bit over 6 hours for CD#1.

The look is great. I have set the 19" flat panel monitor to 1280 x 1024
resolution, and everything looks sharp and clear, although I haven't yet
tried very much.

Performance is off / on. For example, if I start LVM from System Setup,
the window comes right up, but the information about the two drives
takes several minutes to appear. Also, I formatted a 20GB volume to
HPFS, and it seemed as if the process went slow, then fast, then slow,
then fast again, but it completed in about 2 - 3 minutes. A 2GB HPFS
for Swap formatted very quickly. I tried a "dir /s dani*.*", and it ran
fast. I'm installing CD#2 stuff now, and I told Stellar Frontier's
installer to Browse for a destination directory, and it is taking a long
time. I'm not sure whether I have a problem or not; any opinions?

I specified that the Uniaud driver should be used, but on the
installation reboots (and today's boot as well), I'm seeing something
like the following:
=====
Universal Audio Core Driver v1.1.0
ERROR: Initialization Failed

Universal Audio MMPM/2 Driver v1.0.9
Unable to attach 32-bit driver
C:\MMOS2\UNIAUD16.SYS
=====
The system has integrated audio, AC97, but I bought a "Sound Blaster
Live! 24-bit ADVANCED HD Audio". I don't think there is any recognition
of the sound card in Hardware Manager. How can I track down and resolve
this problem?

I specified that Network stuff should not be installed. But once I got
through the install, I used the latest Nicpak, and it says it doesn't
see a NIC on the system (it has "Integrated Gigabit Ethernet"). Should
I try to pursue this with Dell (what is the chipset, or other questions)
and / or with Chuck McKinnis (do you know if anyone has made this work,
or other questions)? Or should I just go buy an Intel Ethernet card?
If I buy one, is there any reason to go Gigabit? (I have an Adelphia
Cable connection.)
Thanks,
Colin
