Do we have any electrical engineers or telco techs in the house ? If
so, here's a real puzzler for you.

Early in the course of our recent prolonged deluge, my DSL pretty much
went down. What happens is that the Power / Sync light on the DSL
modem goes from solid Green to blinking Red, and the Line Error light
will likely come on Red. An SBC tech came here and said there was
nothing wrong externally. He is coming back in a few days to check
the inside installation. When leaving from the initial visit, he said
that the problem has to be either a failing DSL modem, or something in
the inside wiring.

Now here's where it gets really weird. I've found a temporary
workaround: If I dial out with the V.90 modem, even just until it
connects, and then hang up, the line fault registered on the DSL modem
goes away for a period of between 15 minutes and an hour ! This
happens consistently and reliably. There is nothing connected between
the two modems. They should have nothing to do with each other. I
therefore conclude that a dial out by the USR cannot fix -- even
temporarily -- any problem inside the DSL modem. That leaves only the
inside wiring installation for the DSL as a suspect. But why does
that situation get corrected, even briefly ? Does any of this make
sense to you ?
