OK. I suspect I know what your problem is.

In \mptn\bin\setup.cmd, REM out the line that reads:

dhcpstrt -i lan0

This is trying to assign an IP address to the 3COM and is just confusing
things. Since the installer found the 3COM card, it assumed you wanted to
use it. Just leave config.sys as is. There's no benefit to changing it.

If this is not sufficient to fix things up, let me have copies of:

\ibmcom\lantran.log
\mptn\bin\setup.cmd

and I figure out the rest.
