Yes, there is a considerable *additional* investment in regard to
whatever carrier you sign with. This also includes selection of a phone
model based on particular features you want, learning the phone and
becoming comfortable with it, to the the point of hesitation at doing
that all over again too lightly. I probably know how to use 20 % of what
my phone can do. (Read the manual ? Yeah, right.)

If you put any stock in what Consumer Reports has to say, Verizon bests
Sprint in a number of categories in a number of markets, including parts
of SoCal. But *every* carrier is going to have its share of dead cell
zones -- it's just a question of where they happen to be, and whether or
not this happens to impact YOU. Sprint has some rather spotty coverage
around parts of greater San Diego. Verizon is definitely the better
choice there. I've had pretty good results with Sprint, around the range
of greater L.A.
