Someone on another list recently mentioned the
Hardware Abstraction Layer ("HAL") in Win NT / 2K /
XP. This is what is designed to prevent *direct*
access to the hardware, in part to preclude the sort
of system crashes we commonly saw back in the DOS era,
when some wayward app did things it shouldn't do.
(Please excuse if that description is not spot on.)
This led me to wonder whether OS/2 has something
equivalent . . . esp. in view of the common design
history that existed for the period in which IBM was
working with MS. Also, I suspect this may be a
necessary feature of latter day operating systems.
