As I said earlier the problem has nothing to disk size, only directory size.
FAT32 has the same problem as FAT with the way it inserts files into the
directory, the main problem being that the file names are not sorted by name
and are in sequence for file insertion. To add a file the system has to search
the entire directory to see if there is a duplicate file name and if not found
add the new file name at the end of the directory.

If I put this on an NTFS file system it works without performance problems.
Currently it is on an JFS file system. What I wanted to do was be able to boot
either winXP or OS/2 and use the same data. FAT32 was the only option that I
thought would work.

Depends on what you are doing. I never open the folder in OS/2 as it will take
a long time to populate the folder. I do process the directory with a couple
of REXX programs for statistics and Polarbar for searching.
