Let me tell you, John, it can be very hard to remove (remnants of Symantec=
AV, that is) *eve if* your system has not been compromised at all=2E I ha=
d
to use a couple of special removal tools from their website, and even then=
I could not expunge all of it ! I think it might be necessary for T=2ES=2E=
handholding guidance in manually removing a bunch of Registry keys =2E =2E=
=2E
much like I had to do once to get rid of the execrable Scansoft scanner
suite that trashed an earlier iteration of my Win Registry=2E ScanSoft
provided that for free, after a little browbeating over the phone, but
nowadays I think Symantec would charge you for this =2E =2E =2E unless you=
r
freebie contract has some gov't clout attached to it=2E I can give you tw=
o
URLs for sites filled with consumer complaints against Symantec=2E (Anoth=
er
reason I don't like doing biz with humongous companines that have little
surviving competition anymore, and pretty much treat end-users with
contempt=2E) Fortunately, the Symantec program remnants I'm stuck with
appear to be dormant, or relatively harmless=2E

Doubt it=2E And DFSEE does not yet cover all this stuff, the way PM long
has=2E I needed to enlarge a FAT32 partition the other day, and had to
resort to PM for this, because DFSEE can't do it=2E I knew going in that
there might be some risk, because we're not supposed to use such tools
*after* LVM has done its thing on a drive=2E But that partition never had=
any LVM assignment or info associated with it, so I took the chance =2E =2E=
=2E=20
*after* I had cloned the whole drive, for insurance=2E With some DFSEE
fixups after the fact, it all worked=2E
> I intend to reinstall W2k because the current copy I consider to be =
=20
> corrupt=2E
Oh yeah, what a pain=2E When it goes seriously bad, Win is basically not
repairable, IMO=2E I take whatever precautions I can: backup the Registry=
every so often and store this *elsewhere*; clone boot partitions or whole
drives periodically=2E I don't ever want to have to spend the time
rebuilding the whole freakin' thing from scratch ! If that happens, I end=
up with a situation like the one that still exists on my tower desktop
system: the W2K boot partitions there got killed by SP4 about a year and a=
half ago, and I never could bring myself to spend the time re-doing them=2E=
=20
I do have W2K on another system=2E When I do rework the tower, it will
probably be with drive trays, the better to isolate the Redmund rubbish,
and facillitate the backup procedures=2E
