Hi Steven,
You were right -- it was a problem with the BIOS.
In the memory compartment I found a small battery for the CMOS. I
disconnected that, waited for a while, reconnected the battery, restarted
the laptop, and everything is back to normal!
No BASEDEV errors -- Soundblaster drivers loading normally -- I have sound
-- and even my modem and wireless LAN are working -- at least for the
moment.
I will see what happens at this point. I wonder if that CMOS battery may
need replacing?
