Well, this discussion has been somewhat enlightening. As far as I know,
I don't think I particularly need Java outside my web browser (Mozilla
Firefox), so I haven't paid that much attention to it. I just assumed
that the eCS 1.2 installer put a current version of Java on the hard
drive. This belief was reinforced when about:plugins tells me:

InnoTek OS/2 Kit for Java Plug-in

File name: npj2_jpi.dll
OS/2 Kit for Java Plug-in 1.4.2_05 for Mozilla

However, at the command line I learn:

[M:\]java -fullversion
JAVA.EXE full version "JDK 1.1.8 IBM build o118-20011106 (JIT enabled:
javax V3.
5-IBMJDK1.1-20011106)"

[M:\]

On the eCS install CD (CD number 1), I see:

[S:\ECS\INSTALL]dir j*

The volume label in drive S is ECS_CDRUN.
The Volume Serial Number is 5600:268C.
Directory of S:\ECS\INSTALL

4-29-04 7:50p 1,192 0 ---r JAVA131.CMD
8-09-04 5:36p 5,167 0 ---r JAVA142.CMD
2 file(s) 6,359 bytes used
0 bytes free

[S:\ECS\INSTALL]

From reading the first few lines of the files, one assumes that running
one of the above will install IBM Java 1.3.1 or Innotek's 1.4.2. I
gather that just deleting the JAVA11 directory tree and related
Config.sys entries will remove Java 1.1.8. I dimly recall that something
required it - Feature Installer? Does one still need this?

John
