I'm back in town. I want to personally thank Steven Levine for covering
me on the SCOUG server (hopefully there weren't any problems). Thank
you, Steven.
I was only supposed to be gone one day but it turned into almost two
weeks, and it's a perfect example of why backup systems (both machine
and human) need to be in place. In my case, one of my San Diego in-laws
got married on Saturday Nov 5, and I was supposed to be back in L.A. the
following day. The wedding was perfect, but the reception afterwards
was a typical in-law free-for-all. I have never been to a "demolition
derby" but I sure knew one when I saw it, and two wrecker trucks (and
two tuxedoes) later we finally were able to close it down. The two
wrecker trucks hauled off the two disabled vehicles and one of them
first hauled a third one up the hillside where it had slid. The in-law
derby drivers took out the front lawn, the lower acre garden and a
decent amount of the house (the reception was in back and no one was
seriously injured). I'm glad the wedding was in rural eastern San Diego
(Jamul) or neighbors would have certainly called in the cops. I had to
stay and get contractors for the repairs -- $1800 to a landscaper
because the joy riders took out the front lawn and the one acre garden
irrigation system along with the plants, and two carpenters started last
Monday. The house damage is somewhat major -- one corner and adjoining
wall is gone and it's structural, and the estimate is five weeks and
$35,000.
Luckily Steven was my backup for the SCOUG server. Everybody should
have some kind of human backup system in place, "just in case" you're
out of town longer than expected.
- Peter
