Just process of elimination, as usual. Computers are stupid. Really the
same really means really the same. Close is often a recipe for investing
more time in a problem. :-)
If you don't use the WL330g all the time, what you can do is create a
desktop object to issue the ifconfig command to create the alias when you
need it. You only need the alias to access the configuration pages.

As with all wireless setups, there's lots of variables.

That would be nice. Would you like to do a little show and tell on the
