Subject: SCOUG-Help: dual-core pentium

Content Type: text/plain

Steve S., Steven, Anyone:

I am looking into changing some of the H/W in my tower
desktop, principally the mb & cpu. Someone told me
recently that a 945, 955, or 965 based chipset is
required for the new dual-core pentium CPUs.
(Obviously, I'm thinking in terms of staying on the
Intel side of the street. Don't know whatever
comparable things may be going on for AMD.) Someone
else told me that the dual-core technology (in effect,
2 CPUs in one ?) is quite advantageous, and that one
can detail specific app.s -- even older DOS app.s --
to just use one side or the other, for greater power
and operating efficiency. If _that_ is true, it
suggests to me that perhaps this functionality is
OS-neutral ?

What implications, if any, does dual-core architecture
hold for *our* platform ? Support, in any official
sense, is one thing. But does it pose any problems
or incompatibilities ?

Jordan
