Maybe your crashing neurons are contagious . . . .
OTOH, there IS an Extended-X type partition wrapper .
. . so maybe there is also a FAT-32X type latterly in
use ? The drives I was talking about belong to
Windoze only, so there's really no expectation of the
user knowing what's going on under the hood, and most
often no need to know -- it just happens. That could
be their main advantage: dumbed down transparency.
