Subject: SCOUG-Help: Sort of proud of myself...

Content Type: text/plain

SCOUG meetings tend to inspire me to "catch up" on nagging problems.
Maybe I was also fueled up by the big piece of cake I had....

I returned from yesterday's meeting determined to try again to get sound
working on my Dell Dimension 8400, after Jerry told us that the latest
UniAud was worth another try.

I had been having trouble getting eCS 1.2 to start on that PC. So,
during one boot, I asked (using Alt-F2) to see the drivers as they
loaded. The system stopped after listing APM.SYS. I rebooted to a
command line, and edited CONFIG.SYS, REMming out the APM.SYS and
VAPM.SYS lines.

Now, I could boot without trying 5 - 15 times.

Am I now totally out of luck on using Power Management?

=====
Now, on to the sound situation.

I was getting error messages during boot about UniAud, complaining about
the UniAud32.SYS and the UniAud16.SYS. I replaced the two .SYS files,
replaced the UniAud.DLL, and replaced the UniMix.EXE. I'm not at all
sure that this was the right way to go about "updating", but I thought
I'd give this way a try....

Upon reboot, I have a very loud startup sound. However, when I opened
"Local System", "System Setup", and "Sound" and tried to test various
system sounds, they were quite faint. The volume control on my speakers
is set to mark 2 out of 10, and I had the volume control in "Sound" set
to 40%, 60%, and 70%. Regardless, the sounds were nearly inaudible.

Is this where I need to use UniMix? I read a little about it in
UniMix.TXT, and it seems to say I should try some changes, and if I like
them, save them in a file to be used from that point on. Is that how it
works?

I had also been getting irritating error messages when playing Klondike
Solitaire or Mahjongg - "Device Driver not found." I was pretty sure
this was due to not saving sound working. I started Solitaire, and sure
enough, no error message.

=====
Now, I wonder why my Internet connection wasn't working on the Dell?
Oh, well, it wasn't working on the WinXP side, either, so I'll get into
that separately.

Connecting it back up to the old, reliable Indelible Blue box worked
just fine (once I remembered to plug the power cord back into the Cable
Modem).

Thanks,
Colin
