Subject: SCOUG-Help: Going Wireless on a Desktop PC

Content Type: text/plain

I'm still fiddling around with getting my newly-won Wireless Router to
talk to both my PC's.

I started looking for a wireless PCI card that I could stick into the
Dell PC. I see that GenMAC says it supports:
ASUS Wlan RT2400
Atheros Wlan (three types - not sure what's the difference)
Intel 2100 Wlan
Intel 2200 Wlan
Rtl 8180 Wlan

What I've seen so far seems to say that the Intel cards are mini PCI,
and are for laptops, although maybe I don't understand what I'm reading.

I think the other three are chipsets, and I'm not having much luck
finding what brands (like Linksys, Belkin, D-Link, AirLink, etc.) have
which chipsets. I went looky-loo'ing at Fry's this afternoon, and came
away not knowing anything, except that I couldn't find ANY Intel
Wireless products.

Does anyone know of a card suitable for a desktop machine that will work
with GenMAC? Should I consider buying a PCI card that will take a
laptop style wireless card? Is there a USB solution that would work?

To summarize -- HELP, please!
Thanks,
Colin
