Set up the router to use WAP if all devices support it, if not use WEP. WEP is
not hard to break but for the average person it is enough. Also configure the
router to only attach to computers with a given MAC address. Using both of the
above will keep most people out of your computer but a real hacker can still
get in without much trouble.
I have walked around my neighborhood and found 10 or 12 wireless access points,
only two had any protection, mine and the neighbor directly behind me who is a
radio ham operator, all the rest were open to anyone.
