Both you and Steven mentioned this. The impression that I got from the
presentation at last meeting was that VNC was only a good choice for
internal networks, due to the lack of adequate security. Could you or
Steven clarify this?

This is a very good point, and one that I've had some experience with.
The problem can be mitigated somewhat if the software has the option to
reduce the color resolution being transferred and/or by reducing the
resolution on the target system.
