Did you try to use unimix to set up the mixer controls?

You left out a number of relevant details. If this 1.2MR, you should use
the "reset multimedia" SmartGuide option and reinstall Uniaud. The
version on the 1.2MR CD is fine, but the version on Hobbes is newer and
resolves a couple of issues.
