This may or may not be of any use or interest to you,
Colin, but several mfr.s sell (replacement) booster
antennas that are claimed to extend the range of your
wireless setup. I would think such an option could
have hardware compatibility issues, but should also be
OS-neutral ? Anyway, might be something to check out,
if you run into signal limitations.
