There is a listing of news providers on the Big8 web site (which I
maintain, so if anyone knows of additions/corrections please let me know) -
http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=faqs:news_providers

Besides my own ISP's news server (which is actually provided now by
Giganews) I also subscribe to Individual.net ( http://news.individual.net )
as a backup. It is in Germany but anyone can subscribe. Its only 10 EURO
a year (I put it on a charge card and they figure out the conversion).
They don't allow any binaries, but for the comp.*.*.* groups they retain
posts for 223 days. A list of what hierarchies they carry and how long
they retain posts can be found at
http://news.individual.net/hierarchies.php I don't need the backup so much
anymore since my ISP stopped doing their own news (extremely badly when
they did), but for that price its worth keeping.
