"It is hard to tell when the trap occurs because the device statements go
by so fast. It looks like the NIC drivers are loaded and then the screen
goes blank and then I get the trap 8 message"
Can't help with your basic problem, but can suggest that you can let the drivers load one by one in ecs 1.2 with an alt-F4 at the bootup blob.
