From the incoming mail from several mailing lists and a
good selection of news groups I keep copies of perhaps
10% of the messages and postings; they form a very
valuable reference and archive to me. I have a good
collection of subfolders in my Local Folders, even
sub-subfolders, named by subject or area of interest, and
as I process messages in my inbox and postings, I move or
copy anything of interest to me into appropriate folders.
I try to keep my inbox empty, and seldom leave anything in
the inbox for later reply or comment more than a day.

One thing I intend to ask the Mozilla Thunderbird people
for is an easy way to sort and group the newsgroups in the
newsgroups listings (? folders, subfolders, ...?) . I
have many newsgroups that I look at occasionally, depending
on what is going on in my hot furious mind at the moment --
all the java groups, my favourite compting language groups,
utilities, .... If I open up a particular news server, I
get all the newsgroups on that server checked when I don't
really want that. I can't even get 2 news accounts with
the same server; the attempt to set up a second account
with the same server does nothing. Rats.

John.
