Martin,
In my opinion, I think you need to start by having another eCS or OS/2
operating system on your PC. I think many people call this a
"maintenance partition". Make sure that each op sys can see the other's
drive. Having one allows you to do your backups from there, and makes
all of the files in the "primary partition" available to be copied.
When eCS or OS/2 is running, some files are locked, and I've read that
XCOPY, for example, won't copy them.

I also install most of my software that didn't come with eCS on another
drive. Both of the os's can reference this drive, and it offers a bit
of protection against reinstallation if you have problems like your
current one.

After that, you have options for how you make the backup, where you
store it, etc.

Sandy's method is a good one; there are others as well, of course.
