Shame on me for not asking....  And a split bus would be nice, I  
have a 2nd symbios sitting around just to handle scanner/tape/cdw.   
Maybe I'll take another look at that solution after the dust  
settles from my latest crisis.  I can always put the Adaptec in a  
computer that I have sitting around for playing w/ linux, replacing  
the 2940 scsi2 that is in there.

Seems to be I can adjust the timeing on the symbios, I'll check  
that out.

Well, the drive & media haven't changed since yesterday.  Only the  
addition of the 3 drives on the chain in front of the CD and  
changing CD drive from ID 1 to ID 4 so that the drives would fit in  
front of it (easier to pull CD than the drives to change the  
jumper).
