And don't forget *.JPEG. Fortunately, one does not
often run into files with that nonsensical extension,
but they do turn up from time to time.

Nor do I. (Have you asked the author of PMView about
this ? In the past, I have found him to be helpful
and responsive to emails.)
In cases like what you (and Sandy) describe, there
often seems to be an errant .DLL file or two involved.
This can be a royal pain to track down, though.
