This is very odd. There are newer video chipsets that exhibit this kind
of probably. Basically, some newer systems omit VGA support because
windows does not need it. However, you have a T42 which is, IIRC, a
support system for OS/2, so this would not be the case.

TTBOMK, the solution for the Winmodem is to get a PCMCIA modem.
