I have no idea, although I long ago decided to let other pay to keep them

Sure.

There are literally millions of choices. Closer is better because
generally closer means a faster response. Working is always good too.

You can use nslookup and dig to find nameservers

dig ns orange.rr.com

or

nslookup -type=ns orange.rr.com

is what I used to find yours. You can test a nameserver with

dig @server host

or

nslookup host server

although, I find nslookup does not always work as I would expect it too.
