To the extent that was ever an express intention, I
haven't seen much real follow-through on it.

One can certainly do serious work WITH it, as many of
us do, but to even make that choice in the first place
you need to be a dedicated hobbyist, and something of
a contrarion, willing to take the extra trouble and
swim against the tide.
