It is unliky to hurt. The thing to keep in mind about routers is that
they may look like hardware, but they are mostly software. Sometimes
subtle changes in the network traffic will cause the issues. For an
end-user, the only way to effectively test this is to upgrade the firmware
or replace the router and see if the issue goes away. With older models
firmware upgrades are not always available, so swapping hardware is the
only real option.
FWIW, I've got a retired D-Link in the closet for just this reason.
The earthlink supplied modem is now working in gateway mode because they
did something that broke the PPoE authentication in their own equipment.
I now let the Linksys do the authentication and such. Go figure.
