Yes, I followed that trial religiously, because I was really annoyed at the anticompetive
practices Microsoft had concerning rival software, especially operating systems (OS's),
such as OS/2.

During the trial Microsoft argued that Internet Explorer (IE) was an integral part of the OS
and could not be removed. The government expert wrote a program that safely
removed it from the OS, Windows 95 at the time. Writing that program was not for
amateurs and any manual removal of it from the OS would be difficult.

Since that time Microsoft has indeed interwoven IE into the fabric of Windows XP.
Removal is extremely difficult and probably not worth the effort.
