Stick an older 1.x stick in it to verify functionality. If that works,
you need to track down a 1.x USB compatible drive.

It's very worthy for what it is designed to do. It will prevent the
obvious PNP hacks and such on the closed ports. However, it can do
nothing to stop stuff that comes in via the web and mail. This requires
powerful filtering that is typically not available in consumer level
routers.

sufficient. As you spend more time in Windows, you will need to
understand this stuff better, or pay someone to take care of it for you.
